The only downside is that there will be *MANY* problems with the subscriptions.
I run a list about the size of the Vanagon list, and people will sign up as
joe@bob.net and try and post from joe@mail.bob.net (mail prefs) and it will
bounce because they don't match. I have to fix at least 3 of these a week. New
slavery for the list mom. But, we have not been spammed yet. (knock on wood)
