You most likely have a linkage problem...try adjusting the shift gate below the shifter to access 1st a bit easier...Put it into 1st...loosen the 2 bolts under the carpet that hold the shifter in place just a bit and force (gently of course) the shifter towards the steering wheel...if you feel it move a bit..then tighten the bolts & try it..for minor adustments this works great..
