Subject: '87 Vngn stuck in 3rd gear
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Hello I have to get the girl back home tonight and also decide if this is a repair for me and my limited skills or for someone with more time and tools and less fear of an open transmission.

Symptoms: -Transmission is stuck in 3rd gear -Shift lever moves only between 3rd and 1st gear detents (with difficulty) and will not move towards 2nd or 4th at all. -The small amount of moving that the gear shift lever does will not move out of 3rd gear, no neutral.

I searched the archives like a good little boy and saw a similar problem discussed where the problem was the synchronizer hub for 3rd/4th (apparently). The symptoms described by that problem don't seem to match my problem though so I'd like some input, please.

My intution says it's a linkage problem. However, in my brief exploration I was able to move the linkage freely right at the gear box. I didn't want to yank too hard and get it out of gear since I have to drive 18 miles tonight. If I'm gonna get stuck in a gear, I'd prefer to leave it in 3rd, high enough to roll home, BARELY low enough to get rolling.

Thanks in advance, Roy (and Glenda, an '87 GL with nothing special other than the heart of a trooper.)
