Sorry to hear about the tranny problem.  I respect your need to keep
costs down by doing a minimal DIY repair.  If you were going to keep the
van whatever you do is fine, but if you are just planning to fix it and
sell it I would recommend that you first try to sell it as is with an
allowance of $1500 for the transmission repair.  As someone who buys old
vehicles and advises others who do, I hate to see this type of repair,
because so many worn parts are left in the box and failure will again
come soon.  If you do do this, please don't represent the box as
"rebuilt" to the new owner, but simply repaired.

So, here are the options you might consider:

1.  Sell as is at a $1500 discount.
2.  Find a buyer who will buy it AND the parts (and tools) needed for
you do DIY a complete rebuild.
3.  Have it rebuilt by a pro.
Last and least desirable,
4.  Replace only the bad part and sell it, advising the new owner of the
repair.

Since Syncros sell at a premium, you may actually be best off with
option #1,  especially if you run into a problem reassembling the
transaxle.  Then you will really be SOL!
