My 84 did the same thing. I tightened the mirror a few times and ended up snapping the bolt! The new mirror was the same :-( I ended up taking the ball and socket joint apart and sanding both surfaces with course (80) sand paper. That did it! Other options I have heard of is gluing the ball and socket in place... not exactly a versitle option.
