This is a fun (if hot) event at the Sacramento Raceway. Not usually a lot of Vanagons but lots of 1st/2nd generation buses. Usually I bring my Vanagon but my son wants to go up in my father's VW Thing. The drag racing is fun to watch. Look for a yellow 1973 Thing with license "MYVW181."

It just occurred to me that maybe driving the Thing is a good way to mark Memorial Day; my father saw his first VW (partially wrecked, as in it was strafed and half turned over) in Germany in May of 1945. A guy in his unit was going to try to take it apart and ship it home; don't know if he ever succeeded.

Donna, 1987 Wolfsburg, etc.
