You could get a mild cam for it - say a 266 degree an adjustable cam sprocket will get a *little* more bottom end grunt for you. The best things you can do to these engines is to make the exhaust better. The 4-2-1 manifold is doing this for you. Unfortunatly with the cam you might get 105 to 110hp - the problem with the Cabriolet engine is it is 8.5:1 compression ratio. Getting a 10:1 compression ratio block will give you another 10% hp increase. We are running a 10:1 cr 1986 Jetta GLI engine in our 84 Westie and we find the power to be on par with a 2.1L wbx - nothing super fast, but it certainly gets us from point A to point B
