I have a customer who is installing a 1998 Passat 1.8T in to his Vanagon. He is going to leave it stock for now, but a chip will bump it to 180hp. Switching to the larger K04 turbo and a different chip will give you 240hp. The problem with the chips and larger turbos is it destroys the flat torque "curve" these engines have. MAXIMUM torque is a constant 155 ft /lbs between 1750 and 4600 RPM, giving you an incrediable 4000 rpm between when the torque is at it's maximum to when the hosepower is at it's maximum - one sweet motor in a Vanagon - make that any car! Just for comparison sake a 2.1 wbx is 117ft/lbs@3200 and 90hp@4800 rpm and the TDI is 149ft/lbs@1900-2600 and 90hp at 4000 rpm.
