Subject: Sealant on metal head gasket and green o-ring?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252"

I've got an 85 passenger van and I'm getting combustion gas in the coolant. Heads were rebuilt about 6000 kms ago. I'm thinking of pulling the heads with the engine in the van, leaving sleeves in place. My question is: has anybody used a sealant such as permatex ultracopper on the green o-ring and the thin flat metal ring gasket? Or is this a stupid idea? What kind of sealant did you use? I'm guessing that the black ring gasket at the crank end of the sleeve is not the source of my leakage problem. Head bolts have been used twice, how many times have other people torqued their bolts? I'm willing to try some kind of repair and R and R before I buy new heads. Any suggestions?

Thanks for any ideas

Gary
