Not any more. Starting with the 99 model (I believe), they are all drive by wire. If you can find an earlier Passt/A4, you're right, they use a throttle cable. Though, I think a throttle cable is as hard to modify as futsing with the potentimeter... To each their own.

Change your fuel system ? ;)

You mean change the fuel filter type and mouting location? Maybe fuel hoses too?

Ugh. The wiring issues are a pain in the neck on the TDI especially if you want to keep the built in cruise control. This is mostly complicated by the fact that the yard that pulled my engine kind of clipped off some of the connectors (which I think were important) and they failed to give me all the parts. But that's my own problem really...
