I went to the local West Marine and got a rundown on what I would need. As my top is "fuzzy from a lot of wear and has a couple of ill advied holes drilled in it for tiedown stantions, I was advised to fill the holes, sand it down, clean with an industrial cleaner, use a filler type primer, then light sand, clean and put a two part acrylic enamel (don't remember if it one or two part for a top coat. Guy looked like he had been painting boats for awhile so I suspect he might know what he was talking about. When in doubt, ask an expert, preferably one who has no financial stake in your project.
