As a road warrior who travels to rural areas I am finding more and more
pay phones with a phone jack for dial up access, but they are still
rare.  I have used Earthlink's toll free numbers ($4.95/hr.) from pay
phones to avoid having to add coins, the notice for which will cut you
off.  Earthlink is pretty good about having local numbers all over the
country, so if you log on for 3 minutes or less you can get away for
$.35 to download email, or you can use a telephone credit card.

I have not found cell phones useful for access, too slow and unreliable.

I guess we will have to wait for Teledesic or someone to get satellite
service going that is affordable.
