don't know if all this is typical, but I my '84 skylight sounds like it could be your vans twin sister. Water drips down through the knob housing too. My "light" has an obvious crack in it and I have been putting caulking on it between rain episodes over the last couple of weeks. It seems to be helping, but I still feel like I'm just delaying the inevitable. I've looked into just buying the parts that I need and the cost is just a little less than buying a whole new unit. Figure that the time and frustration of assemling new parts with old parts is probably worth at least $50.00 of unravelled nerves, I'll probably just buy a new unit. Let me know what "fixes" yours.
