So if you want one that is legal, do the Subaru conversion. If you want one that is time tested, do the Subaru conversion. If you want to stay German, do the I4 conversion (not all legal in CA), if you want one that is original, rebuild or replace your waterboxer. Do all the nice balancing stuff and see how it spins.
