No, it was never used in VWs over here, though the block is similar to the audi 3A I would guess - it's an 8 valve head and the engine is supposedly 2L. The control unit is a motronic distributed for the international market. The SA vans didn't use digifantand had that little 7 pin 'ignition control module' that you find on the earlier pre 93 (and maybe even later, I don't know the motronic systems well enough) inline 4's...
