Subject: 80 severe rear crankshaft leak
Content-Type: multipart/alternative;

Found this on the air cooled newsgroup. Thought someone could help him!PLease replay to him! Kathy 87 GL His email is roq8cyans@aol.com My '80 Westy had a severe rear crankshaft seal leak, which I arranged to have fixed. Alas, the leak has come back -- same puddles, same 1 Qt./300 Mi. leak rate. I'm guessing that either the seal was damaged during installation, or the crankshaft has excessive endplay. Also, shortly after picking it up from the shop, I checked the oil and it was overfilled by about half the distance between the "add" and "full" markings. Could that have something to do with it? Is there something else that could have caused the leak to come back, that I missed? Thanks in advance for answers, advice and ubiquitous off-topic (but nonetheless entertaining) comments :-) --Rusty J. '80 Vanagon Westy -- the MacroBus
