If you get the clips from VW, they will have a plastic rod/pin in the center of the clip. You have to remove this small rod so that you have a hole that the screw will go into.

This is one that baffled the VW parts guy when I ordered some of these. It seems that the clip is used for multiple cars - so it is not readily apparent how the screw is used.
