I don't know about pre-86 Vanagons, but my sliding door can be locked after being released from the "open" latch, then just slide it shut and it's locked. My 90 Carat has power locks and once both front doors are closed I turn the key to lock the fronts and when the slider is closed, it locks automatically.

I once had a young lady working with me who, on more than one occation, was late because she locked her keys in her car (it was not a VW which requires a key to lock the drivers door). I asked her why she didn't use her key to lock her car..."it takes too much time".
