I had this problem last road trip with mine. I was coming back to New Orleans from Tennessee. It didn't happen often at first, but as I got closer, it was more frequent. I wound up holding it in by hand for 75 or so miles. My arm got very tired and ached the next day. Tranny still working for local driving (even highway speeds for 8 mile trips!). I guess the heat of a longer run must aggravate the problem.

I wondered this myself. When I asked the list some time ago, no one speculated on the long-term consequences. The obvious one I can think of is the risk of more complete failure somewhere in the boondocks.
