I respectfully disagree. We had occasion to spend the better part of a day in some South Carolina backwater with Bubba (the head mechanic) trying to figure out why the oil idiot light on my parents' Passat had come on the day before on the highway. Turns out it was electronics on the receiving end, so a dual sender or redundant sender with gauge would have let us know it was OK to drive on ... we were wasting precious vacation time here.

Also, on these older beasts, I find it reasuring to know that my oil pressure still shoots up when I step on the gas pedal to the tune of

P(lb/in^2) >= RPM/100

Anyway, works for me...not everyone needs it.
