You didn't say what kind of "laborious" your shifting problems had, but if shifting is simply getting stiffer, before you change trans oil, get a spray can of lithium (or other) grease, and spray the shift rod where it goes through each of the two bushings on its way toward the transmission (one right at the trans, one further forward. This was always the problem with our 87, since it didn't have the later protective boots at those bushings, and the grease periodically got dried out and mixed with road dust (I think VW added the boots in 87-88, and you should be able to retrofit them.) Another symptom of the same problem is that shifting may get easier in rainy weather, when the rain acts as a temporary lubricant.
