Thanks to Daryl of AAA transaxle in Duvall, WA for having a suggestion that something could be clogging the filter screen of the of my neighbor's 87 Vanagon automatic trans. That's what it was. I removed the sump pan and found the filter screen clogged with paint flakes that were peeling off the bottom of the sump. Does anyone know if these were painted at the factory? We used paint stripper to remove all the paint. It is rather easy to remove the sump pan, so anyone with a new vanagon or trans problems might find having the service done on the trans will save you a lot of trouble and money. Another question, is it necessary to drain the final drive? The owners manual says it doesn't need to be drained.
