Subject: Re: tire pressure
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

My door sticker specifies a load range as follows:

185 R14 C 6PR, Front 39, Rear 48, Cold OR 205/70 R14-97 R, Reinforced, Front 30, Rear 40, Cold

Mine is a GL Weekender manufactured 4/86 with listed GVWR 5269, Front 2646, Rear 2866. (If you add the front and rear it is 5512 ?)

About 3 weeks ago i bought Firestone, Wilderness, AT III, 27x8.50 R14 LT, 95Q M/S, 4ply tread, 2ply sidewall, 1515 lbs at 50 psi cold.

In El Paso, TX in the morning, when cold they were inflated to 40 psi rear and 38 psi front. A week later in northwestern MO they checked at 36 psi rear and 34 psi front. Back in El Paso they check 38 psi rear and 36 psi front.

The low and high temperatures in El Paso, TX are both higher than in MO. Also, El Paso is over 4,000 ft in elevation while I suspect MO is considerable lower.

I would never exceed the maximum inflation pressure listed on a tire. Yes, I am running tires that do not meet the listed specs for a Vanagon. I have a little over 3000 miles on these (a lot of driving) and I like them. Its unlikely that I will ever load my Vanagon to the listed max GVWR. They handled well during some very interesting thunderstorms last week while returning to El Paso and I like the ride.
