Hi Mick,
I looked at ETKA and found that the switch for the Vanagon includes a wiring
harness. That's probably why it's so expensive. You should be fine with
the Jetta switch (part #191 959 855) and then transferring the harness from
your old Vanagon switch to the Jetta switch.

My switches are gradually going out as well. As far as cheap parts go, VW
quoted me $80 a piece for new ones. That's kind of tough to swallow... I
tried fixing them, but the little seesaw contacts inside get pretty worn and
once they find a way to slip out of place, they continue to until you break
down and buy new switches. One of the vendors on the list (I don't remember
which just now) quoted me $35 per switch so I might go that way or maybe
start combing the junkyards. Any other ideas?

They are very easy to take out. You have to remove the frame first. Pop
out the frame on the top with your hands of a screw driver. Don't try to
pop the frame out at the bottom or it will break. The switches are easily
available at the dealer and also relatively inexpensive (for a Vanagon part)
since they are shared with the Jetta/Golf/etc.

The front-most power window switch on the driver's side (the one that
controls the passenger side window) has gotten progressively more
sticky over the last year or so. It primarily sticks in the window up
position, causing the window motor to make a clicking sound (I'm
assuming it's an overload/overheat relay in the window motor) and
frequently interferes with the operation of the passenger side switch.
The basic problem with the 'sticky' switch seems to be mechanical;
that is, it seems that the rocker mechanism is jamming, perhaps
against the switch cover bezel piece or even within the interior switch
mechanism.
Is there any way of removing and dissassembling this unit? How
difficult is removal of the switch assembly?
