From the Mobil 1 Product data sheet:

"Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant is suitable for all automotive applications where lubricants meeting MIL-PRF-2105E, API Service GL-5, are recommended. It can also be used in rear axles where an API Service GL-4 lubricant is recommended. It should not be used in transmissions requiring an engine oil or automatic transmission fluid, or GL-4 performance level."

Yur transaxle requires a GL-4 lubricant. GL-5 oils have an additive that attacks bronze components, like the VW synchronizer gears. I use Redline synthetic gear oil in both of my vans. It costs $9-10 per quart and is available at some retailers and also directly from Redline at http://www.redlineoil.com/

Question - does anybody have any experience using Mobil 1 Gearcase lube (75-90 synthetic)? I've got a '85 westfalia and am thikning of replacing the tranny/differential with Mobil 1. Shifting is getting laborious (yes, is adjusted correctly) and am interested in getting as long out of this as I can . . . .
