Hi everyone, I'm looking to buy my first Vanagon Westy and I have a couple of questions. My wife and I have found a 86 that is a possibility. It has 95K and is super clean.

1) If the Westy does not have A/C is it a big deal to add it? If so how much would it cost (estimated)? My wife and I are not very mechanically inclined, so we would like to put in a trouble free model if there is such a thing. What I was thinking was that I could add a newer non-freon model, if possible.

2) It is a standard shift, which I quite enjoy, but we were thinking about going automatic. Can the conversion still be done? How much? Is it a reliable thing to do or would it be asking for some problems? Are there any performance problems with doing this like being able to take on hills and such?

3) I know this is subjective because none of you have any clue as to the condition of the Vanagon, but assuming it is in really good running order and well maintained is $8500.00 a fair price to ask for an 86 Vanagon GL Westy?

4) I know that these motors last a long time if well maintained. The motor already had 95,000 miles on it. If it has been properly taken care of can we expect to not have to do a rebuild any time soon? Again, I know this is subjective because you have not inspected the motor, but what can I say we are not looking for a project.

Thanks to all for being here. I have recently jumped on this list and y'all are an invaluable resource. By the way my wife an I are selling our 78 westy. Perfect running condition but needs body work. If interested let me know and I will give you the details.

Hope all is well Sean and Michelle 78 westy "Burrthah" http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~srohde/vw.html
