This is a nice way to go. We did this about 4 years ago. Spring for the cabin if you can swing it. Be prepared to spend lots of time in the Portland parking lot waiting in line. Not so bad though...always folks to talk to. Plus in a VW, you've got everything you need.

We found no large crowds anywhere, except Halifax, so we skipped that. Take your time ambling up the coast and poking into little villages. Lunenberg and Peggy's Cove are known for their beauty, but there are lots of other places. We drove up to Cape Breton Island...breathtaking views.
