If you the location of the sensor is under the front doorsill plastic next to the driver's seat, it is a sensor for the airbag. It doesn't much matter where in the car it is as long as it can detect severe deceleration (as in hitting another object at a high rate of speed). In my opinion its better that it is put where it is. if it was at the front of the vehicle, the impact could kill the sensor and the airbag might not go off. OUCH!! I had a '97 Jetta before I got my V'gon, and I saw the device you speak of.
