Take a serious look at Bob Donalds' work at Boston Engine (http://www.bostonengine.com).

I took a trip to Bob's shop in March to pick up a rebuilt 2.1 waterboxer. Here are some pictures and thoughts from the trip:

I haven't put the engine in yet, but I've heard from other folks who are running Boston rebuilt engines and are sailing along.
