Peter:

The temp and fuel gauge problem is a common one on VW instrument clusters. Eurovans and Rabbits have suffered from this for years. Your VW dealer shouldn't have to go on a fishing expedition. More than likely they have dealt with this problem many times over. Describe the problem and ask them if they can "fix" it. They will probably offer the replacement option. Way too expensive. Ask them if they can "fix" it. They will probably say they can "try" to resolder the circuit board on the instrument cluster, but they will not guarantee the repair.

This was my experience. I gave them the go-ahead. They "fixed" it. Charged me for 1.5 hours. That was at 76k miles. Klinger is now at 129k. Never another problem.

If you join the ev_update list on http://www.egroups.com you can search the archives for the do-it-yourself procedure. Many have done it themselves. It's your time and your dollar. Your choice.
