Beautiful day here in W. Michigan. Followed some sage list advice and roamed the auto salvage emporia. Lots of roadside farm stands (strawberries and flowers are in season) in the bucolic countryside of Ottawa County. But only one Vanagon. No bunks, but a few good wheel covers and maybe a $30 windshield. Tanked up at the Amoco in Hudsonville (Salad Bowl City) at 2.09 per, added Techron, natch. Inserted key and...nothing. Turns out that the Little Green Wire in back of the alternator had broken off. The battery was being drained rather than charged. No crimping stuff on board, no real service stations in sight. No jumper cables anywhere. No extension cord for my charger. Scraped some insulation from the LGW, held it in place with an alligator clip. Pushed the van up to the building, plugged in the charger (which I usually never carry around) and had it running after 15 minutes. Happy to be un-stranded, I waved to another Vanagon on the highway and made it back to GR only 4 minutes late for work. The wheel cover only cost a few bucks. Still no bunks. I need to pay more attention to absence of idiot LED's when starting up. ANd maybe carry a few more tools or a Leatherman tool.
