Yes, you should be using a relay with at least a 50 amp rating, or more depending on your battery type.

Also be careful where you draw your relay switch voltage from.

When troubleshooting my '74 Westy's second battery system, I discovered that there was no voltage present at the relay switch until the engine was running.

The relay switch was activated by a wire from the voltage regulator. If you have a discharged high amperage battery and connect the relay to a power source off of your ignition, then your second battery could easily draw enough current to keep you from being able to start your vehicle.
