Actually...

I pulled the plastic chrome strip out of my windshield seal on my '87. It rained
that day, and I noticed that water was coming in at the lower left of the
windshield. The van was parked, so no oncoming wind or anything.

Someone on the list theorized (and I think the seal sectional diagrams in the
Bently back it up) that the plastic chrome insert also helps to force the seal
tightly against the glass. Now, having my windshield seal leak, I'm not so sure
they're wrong.
