While not a "toilet paper" filter per-se the following is a link to a TDI forum thread on the use of an industrial 25,000 mile filter:

I have had extensive talks with some of these guys on the forum and believe me, they are obsessive about oil quality and soot. Frankly, I'm convinced, especially with a diesel engine.
