Subject: Where to find info on tranny codes?

Hi all,

I've had a noisy transmission for some time, and I've just developed a Scary Noise I fear is transmission-related. I figure it's time to start putting out feelers for a replacement / rebuilt tranny should a new tranny be in order. Taking it to the mechanic tomorrow for Noise Identification. Fingers crossed.

Whatever happens tomorrow, I know my current tranny is not going to last 50K miles more. So I want to learn more about what I should be looking for.

I have an '82 diesel with a stock 1.6 L motor and stock DM tranny. the gearing on this thing is quite low, lower than for gas motors. I want to keep it that way, since low gears are my friend when I have only 48 HP and live in a very hilly part of the world.

Is there a site someplace where I can see all the gear ratios for each transmission code? And what about an interchange guide for transmissions? I assume there are subtle differences in design over the years and applications, and I need to know what code to look (out) for.

Info info helpful. Thanks!
