I just got a brand new shiny Bentley manual in the mail today. Why? I need to replace the water pump and I thought getting the manual and doing it myself beats paying the mechanic. The book is great and I can see already how it will help me maintain my Westy.

Got the book and the pump at Johnson's Foreign Car in Decatur, AL -- 1-888-VW-PARTS.

Also got 2 gallons of VW antifreeze at the dealer. $40 with tax. Ouch!

In a word... yes. Even if you don't do any of your own maintenance it's a must have. Otherwise, when you end up dead at the side of the road, the small town mechanic who has never seen a Vanagon before, is going to have to use the notoriously inaccurate 'Mitchel On Demand'. Cheap insurance. Having it available also tells that same mechanic that you might not be as dumb as you seem. ;o)
