If you are going through Missoula, you should take highway 12 towards Lewiston, then swing back north towards Spokane.

Highway 12 takes you over Lolo Pass through the Bitterroot mountains. Hwy 12 is the route that Lewis and clark took :-) It follows the Lochsa river to the Clearwater. Along hwy 12 there are lots of campgrounds and some hot springs. If you are kayaker or boater you will itching to do the Lochsa!
