hey fellow vanagon lovers,
Today when I was removing my starter with a mechanic friend(who really
has no love for this "junk") he tried to loosen up the mount
with a pry bar and instead broke this part that we can not identify. My van
is an 82 Westy Diesel(calls to either "Easty" or "Old
Orange") and since she has been in such good shape since I put it on
the road in 1996 I have neglected to purchase the books I need and Ron at
Bus Depot is so busy that the book I ordered will probably not be here soon
enough. Anyway enough rambling here is the best I can do describing the
part.
1) in the Haynes manual for the air cooled vanagon this part appears to be
in close relation to the brake servo vacuum hose shown as #7 on page 17, but
read on there is more.
2) in looking at the part I can best describe what I need like this. In the
engine compartment in the front to the far left there are two hoses, one is
a black on the right hand side of the far left(bear with me) and the other
is a black connector that goes into the body via a plastic tube(that looks
like the tube in the Haynes in #1) that connects to a unit directly behind
the starter and north west of the oil filter. This unit has a lid with
three bolts(look to be 11mm) and this plastic piece that goes into the unit
and that also goes out to that white tube tube via a black hose and some
clamps. This unit has the letters GJE9(big) and the numbers 30181(small) on
it.
I broke that plastic piece with six little holes around the big hole
that houses that little red flappy rubber thing coming out of the said unit.
I think it may be the brake vacuum servo unit but I am not sure. I also
would like to know if I will have to replace the whole unit or can I get the
white plastic piece, open that unit and replace it. Any help is appreciated
and if I can buy the parts from someone off here even better, used is fine.
