It's both, but really electric. You need a short hose to reach from the old sender port to the new sender since it is too big to fit directly. All is available from VDO, and definitely get the dual sender for the early warning from an attention getting red light. The 1.9 has only one sender right in the middle of the main bearing oil gallery, the perfect place to measure pressure.

See http://www.bus-boys.com/bbvdo.htm for a good description of the products. Other list vendors sell these too, possibly for less $$$. I bought the dash top individual mounting cup (expensive but very nice looking) and mounted it next to the instrument panel.

I can send pix of the installation on the engine if you want.
