I did the same thing about three months ago installing the 3.5" infinity's in place of the stock speakers inside the housing. I didn't cut off the metal ears, I just bent them over. I got a set of four from Crutchfield for around $80. They also had 3.5" Blaupunkt's available, but the Infinity's were on sale so I got them instead. I ordered and installed Bass Blockers on all of these speakers at a later date. I would recommend installing these with the speakers if possible. I'm adding a powered subwoofer later to make up for the missing bass. Lastly, I installed a AM/FM Cassette w/ CD changer control out of a 1995 Jetta to replace the stock unit. You need to add 12V to an additional pin in the wiring harness to get it to work, but it sounds and looks great. I have a 97 Jetta with the same front end unit and like it a lot. Future plans for the Vanagon include wiring up the same number and type of speakers that the Jetta has in it and adding the Clarion CD Changer under my rear facing seat. Hi all, I just replace my front speakers on my 87 Westy using the original VW speaker housings/grills. By the way, they are actually 3-1/2" speakers, not 4". I pryed out the original speakers from the plastic housing and put a bead of silicone around the circumference of the inside of the housing as a spacer, so the new speaker tweeter would not pust against the plastic grill. After that dried, I installed 3 1/2" Infinity speakers into the housings, after cutting & grinding off their metal ears, then siliconed them into place. Good luck, Ray Salt Lake City
