I got a Celsius marked VDO oil temp gauge made in Germany out of a trashed
late 70's Sirroco in a junkyard that appeared to be factory installed along
with voltmeter. don't remember what I paid. Only hassle was wiring the
dash light as it used the rectangular twist in dash light instead of the
round push in kind for the aftermarket gauge. The process of installing
it on my Vanagon along with OP and Vacuum gauges is almost done thanks to
the Bus boys sending me their 12mmx1.5 adapter/sending unit. it was a
little over $20 and they had a 3 hole gauge panel designed to sit on top of
the dash for another $17. I will cover up the ash tray(and continue to
store loose change in the tachometer well, it's a redneck trait of mine)
with a charcoal gray colored piece of minicell and sand it to the shape and
angle necessary to have the gauges easily read. Maybe Velcro it down over
the flat surface around the ash tray hole as it's really hard to drill
holes that high on the dash. May glue it down, but would like occasional
access to the CD head unit from the top.
I'm almost afraid to look at the summertime oil temps on this engine as
compared to my old type IV which had dual 2 barrel webers and an external
cooler on it.
