The answer to this should be obvious. You don't see as many on the road anymore because they are becoming concentrated into ownership by fewer and fewer people, and the owners can only drive one at a time. Of course, this is very disconcerting to a Vanagon owner, so some devise ways or excuses to tow one behind another.

Take my case for example. While being familiar with the sight of the split-window and bay-window buses for as long as I can remember, I had not really noticed the Vanagon years until a few years ago, when I bought a house around the corner from a Vanagon Westy owner. But when I bought my Westy in Nov 99, I caught a fever and within a few months, became an owner of a Vanagon passenger van. Trying to figure out how to convince my spouse that I *need* a single-cab, double-cab, or syncro.

Some list members have so many, their email signature line should list which models they *don't* have.

I'm sure that with enough Vanagon's in one driveway, they will multiply and make up for the ones that have been parted out or wrecked. Someone should do a count of vans into and out of the gatherings that take place in parts of the country and compare them.

I tell you, I think there's something fishy going on. The other night I saw a flying saucer that looked just like a Vanagon hub cap. Anyone else having dreams about being abducted by aliens with a German accent ? Probing you with a Digitool ? No ? Me neither ...
