Andrew, First off you didn't tell us if you have a westy or just regular van.. the top makes a difference in the mounting... of course....

Second... I posted my advice on the Thule just a few weeks ago... If you don't get enough advice in the next day or so, I suggest you check the archives.

Personally, I think the racks are the way to go if you have the bucks... they're not cheap, but they're more secure and prolly less likely to damage the top or the canoe.
