Subject: idle stabilization, shifting, violent lurching, etc.

Hello List,

I am preparing for a 6 week trip in my 87 Vanagon Syncro. Now a problem has come up; after cleaning out the idle stablizer valve and enjoying a month of stable idle, the van has started to lurch violently while in gear revving up into 5000 rpm and dropping down past 1000 sometimes stalling.

I removed the idle stabl. control box and replaced the transistor (NTE185) so... now the idle is somewhat stable but below 1000rpm and stalls if I don't keep my foot on the gas. Do I need to adjust something else? Should I replace the valve with a new one?

I am used to the old engines without all these computer gizmos and am quite frustrated! Could someone guide me in the right direction on this?

Another question ... I tried switching idle stabilizers from my 90 GL into my 87 Syncro and found they had different part numbers, They did not work properly in the other, which makes me think...either they really are different or perhaps the computer needs to be adjusted somehow when a stabilizer valve is changed or replaced.

Loretta 87 Syncro 90 GL 64 1/2 Mustang (4sale)
