I wanted to let you know about a product - NO - I'm not trying to sell
anything here. But, a good product is available for us backyard mechanics,
and the fuel line change-out is the perfect application.
When you are trying to slip your new hoses over those barbed fittings,
obviously you need some lubricant, and as many have probably already done is
used some sort of silicone, or WD-40 or the like. Now, I'm not saying this is
really bad, I mean, you should be able to rely on the mechanical properties
of the barb and clamps to keep things together, but the tendency is there for
the mating parts to keep being slippery, and that's not what you want.
Friction is good after the assembly.
I keep a bottle of P-80 rubber lubricant in my toolbox, and it's good stuff.
The beauty of it is that it's a TEMPORARY lubricant in emulsion, and an hour
or so after assembly, it's not slippery any more.
I got mine from one of those industrial trade magazines as a free sample -
they sent me like a pint of the stuff, and I've been using it for years.
