Ah so... <g> -- my first thought is that your relay is more sensitive than the original, and is engaging when the other would not. When I get a chance I'll monitor the D+ line while cranking and see what's happening with mine -- I'm quite sure it's not engaging while I crank, but only after I rev the engine to the point where the regulator kicks in and starts charging (1000 rpm prox).
