Subject: Changing fuel filter- what am I missing here?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Hi Volks:

Today was my first crack ever at changing a fuel filter on my 84 Westy 1.9.

Both Haynes and Bentley show the fuel filter inboard of a frame rail, near the front of the vehicle.

On my Vanagon, the fuel filter and pump are inside a very large protective pan ( as large as the fuel tank, easily) - with at least 12 bolts.

Said pan is not mentioned in the service manuals- is it "taken for granted" this pan is to be removed in order to get filter access?

Is there any way to change said filter without removing the pan?

Thanks in advance!
