When I think back to the KDF Wagen design I am reminded that Dr. Porsche chose the flat four engine layout partly because it can run at top RPM for very long periods of time. The engines in our Vanagons are derivatives of that old design and same principle should apply.

Last year I drove my '67 Squareback from Alabama to Detroit at 70 to 75 MPH and had no problems outside of high operating temperatures. The engine was near redline at that speed. The car had a 3-speed automatic transmission out of a '69 and the factory rated the top speed at 82 MPH.

Providing your motor is healthy and the operating temperatures stay within normal ranges I see no problem driving at that speed.

Hi List,

I have been travelling the Garden State Parkway(mostly flat) at speeds of 65-75 mph at about 3500-4100 RPM's for about an 1- 1 1/2 hours. Is this safe for my 87 Wolfsburg edition 2.1 L automatic? The engine has about 3400 miles on the rebuild.

Thanks,
