Hello there Space Kommander.
It just happens I have been doing some research in the replacement speaker
area for my '85 Westy. Here are some points that became clear to me during
the process.
1. I don't want to cut, hack, or otherwise bastardize the door panels, door
metal or the rear A/C cabinet. I'll be glad I didn't 10 years from now --
collector's value.
2. I want to stick with Blaupunkt. You won't see me put a Japanese radio
in my VW. I'm funny that way.
3. The 4'' speakers don't offer much in replacement choice, so I broke out
my trusty Crutchfield catalog. I found a set of 4'' Blaupunkt speakers -
PCxg402 - with 92 dB sensitivity, 70 - 20K frequency response, 2 - 40 watt
power range and 120 peak power handling. These are two way speakers and the
tweeter protrudes 1/4 inches.
4. Unless you have power windows you cannot mount these speakers with the
Blaupunkt grill because the window lift handle will not clear. I would like
roll my windows down and would prefer to keep the stock look of the present
door panels. Told you I was funny that way.
5. Final point. If these speakers can be bottom mounted to provide
sufficient space for the tweeter to clear the factory speaker grills they
are the perfect replacement choice considering points 1 - 2.
More research needed. Did you see a way to mount speakers in the doors to
clear the protruding tweeter?
I am also considering installing a small single 10'' or 12'' subwoofer
enclosure that would double as a seating surface. This would not be bolted
down, so it could be put between the front seats or in the rear area. This
subwoofer would reproduce the frequencies that the little 4'' speakers can't
hope to play, and it would be crossed over at a higher frequency of, say,
125 Hz. The subwoofer could be disconnected easily and left at home if more
room was need in the Westy.
