Marshall,
You probably have a gas heater under the floor, yes? Or did have? Most
of the Vanagons I've seen with heaters have a protective belly pan,
which must be dropped to access the fuel filter. I used to just remove
the passenger side and front bolts, and let the pan drop on that side.
I've got one for sale if you need a spare.
